The Embassy of India has announced it will organize the 10th International Day of Yoga in Belgrade on June 22, inviting all to enjoy Yoga - “an art and science of healthy living, focusing on bringing harmony between mind and body.”

The word “yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root “yuj” meaning “to attach, join, harness, yoke,” and is often perceived as s a group of physical, mental, and spiritual practices beneficial to health and fitness.

“Yoga is about harmonizing oneself with the universe. It is the technology of aligning individual geometry with the cosmic, to achieve the highest level of perception and harmony,” it is said in the statement from the Indian Embassy.

Yoga does not adhere to any particular religion, belief system or community and has always been approached as a technology for inner wellbeing. Anyone who practices yoga with involvement can reap its benefits, irrespective of one’s faith, ethnicity or culture, according to the statement.

Yoga practices for health and wellbeing, Yoga Sadhana (exercises) which are broadly practiced include: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana (meditation), Samadhi/Samyama, Bandha and Mudra, Shatkarma, Yukta-ahara, Yuktakarma, Mantra japa, and other.

Yamas (abstentions) and Niyamas (observances) are considered to be the two limbs of Yoga Sadhana practice (exercises).

“Asanas, capability of achieving stability of body and mind 'kuriat-tad-asanam- sthairiam...', mean adoption of various physical and psychological models, resulting in the ability to hold a steady and comfortable posture for an extended period,” according to the release from the Indian Embassy.

Yoga works on the level of one’s body, mind, emotion and energy. This has given rise to four broad classifications of Yoga: Karma Yoga where we utilize the body, Bhakti Yoga where we use the emotion, Jnana Yoga where we utilize the mind, and Kriya Yoga where we use the energy.

Yoga education aims to improve care about an individual, a human being, according to the release.

It is presumed that a good, balanced, integrated, truthful, clean, and transparent person will be more useful to oneself, family, the society, nation, the nature, and humanity, it is said in the release.

“Today, millions of people across the globe enjoy benefits of practicing yoga, which has been cherished and promoted by great and renowned yoga teachers and gurus from the ancient times to the modern days. Yoga is India’s legacy,” the Indian Embassy said in the release.

The International Day of Yoga will be celebrated at Belgrade’s Kalemegdan Park, at the area around the monument of The Victor, from 8:30 to 09:30 am on June 22.
