Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said on June 11 that experts should offer their opinions on mining the country’s lithium deposits but that he sees it as an economic and geopolitical opportunity worth exploiting.

Vucevic, who is the leader of the Serbian Progressive Party, told the RTS public service that all projects regarding the country’s development should be discussed, including lithium mining, but stressed that “no chances will be taken” with Serbia’s environmental wellbeing.

“I’m leaving room for debate and awaiting what the experts will say. If the experts say ‘No,’ then it’s a no. But if it’s possible, let’s take this opportunity!” Vucevic said.

He stated that becoming part of the European Union is in Serbia’s strategic interest, pointing out that peace is the EU’s “fundamental and greatest value.” Therefore, the prime minister concluded, the Western Balkans entering the Union would “guarantee peace” in the region.

Vucevic also expressed his conviction that Serbia will not have another election before 2027 and called for the continuation of the parliamentary dialogue between the regime and the opposition.
