The enrollment of the children of refugees and migrants began in Serbia at the start of 2016 and so far around 1,800 boys and girls have passed through the Serbian education system, including preschool and high school education, Republic Commissariat for Refugees chief Natasa Stanisavljvic told BETA on June 20.
On June 20 World Refugee Day she said that the children that had gone through Serbia’s education system had succeeded in integrating with society and that the language barrier posed no major problem to them.
“While observing children attending school, following them to school and back, talking to teachers and parents, we noticed that becoming part of the education system sat well with the children both in a social-psychological way and education-wise and we also noticed significant progress in learning the Serbian language and acquiring academic knowledge. A number of children successfully gave their final school exam and enrolled in high schools, where they continue to progress,” Stanisavljevic said.
Most of the migrants in reception centers are from Afghanistan, Syria, Morocco, Pakistan and Burundi. The children of migrants undergo preparations before enrolling in schools which includes learning the Serbian language and acquiring literacy.
