The ruling coalition’s candidate for Belgrade mayor, Aleksandar Sapic, said on May 29 that if he kept the post after the June elections, he would be a Serbian mayor of the Serbian capital, and if someone had a problem with that, they should not vote for him, promising that no one would be discriminated against.

In an interview with the newspaper Politika, he said, "Not only in these difficult times, but it always matters if Belgrade has a Serbian mayor and a Serbian government ready to represent Serbian national interests in the first place, or a mayor and a government hiding behind some non-governmental sector and jeopardizing a clearly defined national policy."

"Having a Serbian mayor does not mean that anyone will be discriminated against in the capital -  Belgrade is a cosmopolitan city. It does not mean though that we should feel uncomfortable when we say who we are and what we are, anxious if that might hurt someone’s feelings. We will clearly represent and defend the interests of the Serbian people, and all the citizens living in our city," Sapic said for Politika.
