Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on July 26 that a referendum on lithium mining could take place at the end of next year.

Speaking to reporters in Paris, he said that he first wanted to have an environmental report done by domestic experts, after which he would decide what was to do next.

"If everything goes according to plan, we can ask for a public vote at the end of next year... And people can choose Loznica, or Western Serbia, or the whole country," Vucic said.

Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said on July 27 that he agreed with the proposal to hold a referendum on the use of natural resources and that the government had plenty of time to organize a public vote on the issue. Vucevic also said he was confident that citizens would "support the development of Serbia," adding that a broad social debate on mining was necessary.
