The School of Mining and Geology, the Geological Bureau, the Chamber of Mining and Geological Engineers of Serbia, the Association of Mining and Geological Engineers of Serbia the Bor Technical School and Belgrade Mining Institute stressed in a joint statement on July 30 that political struggles could not be allowed to threaten the integrity of the mining and geological professions and that the question was not whether mining was needed or not but what kind of mining was needed.
In a joint statement, released after the appearance of numerous of reports in public on the mining and geological professions, the aforementioned organizations stressed that these areas demanded expertise, responsibility and respect.
"Without mining and critical raw minerals technological development and progress are not possible nor the transition to renewable sources of energy in the production of energy and the protection of the environment, or lowering the impact on climate change," the statement said. Therefore, they said, "The question should not be and must not be mining or not, but what kind of mining."
They added that opening mines for extracting metallic raw materials required on average from five to 10 years, and that between 15 and 20 years was needed from when exploration began to initial production.
"When speaking about lithium exploration there is a study in Serbia which has the status of being active although no explorations are being conducted. However, the path from exploration to exploitation is long. Exploration by itself does not mean immediate exploitation," the statement said.
