On Aug. 12, the organizers of the Aug. 10 Belgrade rally against lithium mining will be appealing the prison sentences handed to three activists convicted of disturbing public peace and order.
During the blockades of the Belgrade Center and New Belgrade railway stations that followed the rally, police arrested Ivan Bjelic, Nikola Ristic and Jevdjenije Julijan Dimitrijevic, who were subsequently sentenced to 40, 30 and 30 days in prison, respectively.
Staged by the Alliance of Environmental Organizations of Serbia in opposition to the government’s plan to exploit lithium in the Jadar River valley, the capital’s protest was attended by tens of thousands of people.
After the rally, held in the heart of downtown Belgrade, a part of the protestors decided to block the Gazela Bridge and adjacent section of the highway near the Sava Center, as well as the capital’s main railway station – Belgrade Center, also known as Prokop – and the New Belgrade railway station. The blockade lasted throughout the night, until police scattered the protestors around 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 11.
