Germany wants Kosovo to be admitted to the Council of Europe, but prerequisites need to be met for that, which is a process with many participants, German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Kathrin Deschauer has said.
When asked at a news conference whether the German government had dropped its support for Kosovo's membership in the Council of Europe (CoE), Deschauer replied that she could not thus confirm such a suggestion.
"On the contrary, it is primarily about prerequisites that need to be met. We want to see Kosovo in CoE. We reiterated that on several occasions. The foreign minister (Annalena Baerbock) clearly said so at the meeting of Council of Europe foreign ministers in Strasbourg in May. But sometimes those are simply also very long and arduous processes which have to advance," said the spokeswoman.
Asked who was holding the process back, she said: "In any case not us, since you are practically suggesting that we no longer want that."
Reiterating that the government in Berlin wanted Kosovo in the Council of Europe, she said it was a process "with many participants who are to enable that, and we have not reached that point yet."
