In an interview for N1 TV, United States Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill said that the Jadar lithium mining project is “a good opportunity for Serbia” but added that “the Serbs must decide” whether they want to take advantage of it.

Asked about the fact that lithium is currently one of the main issues occupying the Serbian public, Hill remarked that he has noticed the presence of “an anti-Western narrative” in the rallies against mining the metal. While the U.S. supports the right to gather, he said, some participants of the protests are more concerned with Russia’s interests than Serbia’s.

“If we look at some of the participants, not all of them, these are the ones focused not so much on Serbia’s concerns but rather on the concerns of others, namely Russia. If I were a Serb, I’d be worried. There have been accusations of America supporting some of these rallies, but we’ve been trying to make sure that is not the case,” Hill stated.

He went on to note that lithium is currently being excavated in the U.S. and certain European countries, and that this is part of the future in which Serbia has a chance to participate.
