Demonstrations as part of a campaign of broad civil disobedience organized by protesting students under the slogan General Strike took place across Serbia on Jan. 24.
As tens of thousands of students, high schoolers and other citizens marched, a student was hit by a car in New Belgrade striking her head on a curb, causing serious injuries. The driver was arrested and detained for attempted murder, while the woman is in stable condition.
The incident sparked a new series of protests and traffic blockades in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis, Kragujevac, Zrenjanin and other cities. The protesters marched to the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation headquarters to protest its work, blowing whistles and bugles for over two hours and chanting against Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Many companies, associations and political parties have declared their support for the demonstrations, including the Beta News Agency. The Archive of Public Assemblies announced that there were approximately 35,000 people in front of the Serbian government headquarters in Belgrade and another 20,000 people at a turnabout near the New Belgrade municipal building, while a rally organized by the ruling parties in Jagodina was attended by 14,000 people
