On Feb. 5, retirees are rallying in support of the ongoing university students’ blockade – and their demands of accountability for the Nov. 1, 2024 Novi Sad railway station accident that claimed 15 lives and left two people critically injured.
The rally is being organized by the Association of Serbia’s Retired Military Personnel, which has called on other senior organizations to join them.
According to the Association, its pensioners support the students’ fight for a more just society where retirees, too, will live with more dignity. Most of the country’s seniors, the statement said, have been poisoned by regime-controlled media and it will take time for them to come to their senses.
In Serbia, over one million retirees live in poverty, receiving pensions lesser than the minimal consumer basket, while about 500,000 receive less than RSD27,000 (about EUR230) and 180,000 retired farmers have pensions below RSD21,000 (cc. EUR180).
