Kosovska Mitrovica bridge (BETA/SASA DJORDJEVIC)
In the evening on Feb. 17, the police took in 12 ethnic Albanians, including 10 minors, who were driving cars around North (Severna) Mitrovica, predominantly Serb-populated part of the town, waving Albanian flags out of the car windows, thereby celebrating the 17th anniversary of Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence.
Veton Elshani, deputy commander of the Kosovo Police for the North region, has said that throughout the day, police officers were trying to prevent people carrying flags and other insignia from crossing the bridges over to the north part of the town. The detained persons will be charged with a misdemeanor, while the minors without ID cards will remain in police custody until the arrival of their parents.
Pristina unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. To this day, Kosovo’s independence has not been recognized by Belgrade, five European Union countries and around half of member states of the United Nations.
