A docent of the Faculty of Political Studies in Belgrade and member of parliament of the Green-Left Front party, Biljana Djordjevic, assessed on April 24 that “a most brutal attack on the university” was currently under way and could end, in her words, just like Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is predicting, threatening to cut financing.
Djordjevic told N1 television that a more obvious attack on the university began immediately after the collapse of the canopy in Novi Sad, when the authorities “tried to elbow out the Law on university education” and introduce foreign private universities.
“The university is a place of autonomy, freedom and the possibility to socially and politically engage in resistance to authoritarianism. Naturally, it’s a target. It was only a matter of time before it happened,” she said.
