Serbian Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on May 15 that the Cabinet had brought a decision to open an embassy in Riga in an attempt to open up a communication channel with countries that "are more skeptical" of Serbia's European path, claiming that these countries "are blocking Serbia for not introducing sanctions against Russia."

"They have blocked Serbia [on its European path] for not introducing sanctions against Russia. The Baltic countries are at the forefront of this," she said adding that the Serbian embassy in Riga would be in charge of handling relations with these countries. She explained that together with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic a decision was reached to open a communication channel with countries that were more skeptical toward Serbia and its European path, countries whose parliaments frequently voted against opening clusters in accession talks with Serbia.

Serbia last opened a negotiation chapter in December 2021.
