Serbia’s university student protests have morphed into a civil rebellion and elections could help overcome at least part of the current social divide, Goran Svilanovic, the former foreign minister of the state union of Serbia and Montenegro, said on July 10.
In an interview for the NIN weekly, Svilanovic stated that a realistic timeframe for organizing snap parliamentary elections would be the end of the year.
“I hope rationality will prevail and that the [protesters’] demands will be met, so that elections are staged in full compliance with the recommendations of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights [ODIHR]. That requires preparations, and the first step is choosing a [new] Regulatory Authority for Digital Media [committee], one which truly reflects the structure of our society. Then changing the voting laws and adjusting them to meet the ODIHR requests,” the former minister concluded.
