Milos Vucevic (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
Milos Vucevic, the president of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, said on Aug. 11 that his party’s preference is for parliamentary elections to take place in late 2026 but that the actual decision must and will be made by relevant state institutions.
Speaking for Prva TV, former prime minister Vucevic explained that a snap general election will be called by President Aleksandar Vucic and the current Cabinet should the body decide to shorten its term and the president call elections according to the Constitution and law.
“Vucic joined us yesterday during a council meeting of the [party’s] Novi Sad chapter and from what he said we understood it is possible for elections to take place sooner than the party projected,” Vucevic stated.
The politician made it clear that the Progressives will be ready for the vote whenever it takes place, admitting it will be a “tough competition” since “it is certain the blockaders’ ticket is running ahead” – the latter referencing the regime’s umbrella term for the increasingly united opposition, spearheaded by the university-student-run protests and blockades that have been going on for the better part of a year.
“They will certainly be united,” Vucevic claimed of the opposition, adding: “Whether or not [Freedom and Justice Party leader Dragan] Djilas is on the ticket he will de facto be leading it, because without his financing and media outlets they cannot see things through,” the Progressives’ leader concluded.
