The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enlargement and Eastern Neighborhood announced on Aug. 20 that the EXTRA-EURDEP project on the advancement of exchange of radiology data and of cooperation in the field of nuclear safety, with its six partners in the Western Balkans, had been successfully completed.

Within the project, and considering the increasing need for efficient radiology monitoring, the Western Balkans and the EU have closely cooperated in order to improve the status of the national networks for radiological monitoring of the environment through connecting with the European Radiological Data Exchange Platform (EURDEP) or maintaining contact with the platform.

The project, financed from the European Instrument for International Nuclear Safety Cooperation and coordinated by the Directorate-General for International Partnerships, has resulted in advanced cooperation in exchange of data and readiness for emergency situations in the Western Balkans. The statement of the Directorate reads that the project had expanded its field of effect by including the candidates and potential candidates for EU membership.

The project represents a part of a series of activities in the field of preparedness and response to nuclear emergencies within the EU acquis. These are the activities that will be mandatory when the EU’s partners in the Western Balkans join the Union.
