Police (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said on Sept. 8 that there was a problem in Belgrade and that the severe violence and vandalism in the streets must stop.
Kos said after meeting with Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger in Vienna that the police were expected to act appropriately and respect fundamental rights.
Kos went on to say that statements by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic insulting members of the European Parliament would not improve the EU's opinion of Serbia. In a video posted on the X social media platform, Kos stated that calling MEPs scum revealed a questionable understanding of democracy.
She advised the government in Serbia to focus on reforms needed for EU membership, as pledged to her and to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.
Kos urged the Serbian authorities to build an independent justice system to fight corruption efficiently, to free the media and ensure independent reporting, to carry out election reform that would ensure that nothing but the will of the people decided who would be the majority in the parliament, noting that this was the way out of the crisis.
