Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Aug. 20 that the day’s rallies of “citizens who oppose the [ongoing] blockades” took place in 49 locations throughout the country and gathered a total of 33,000 people.

The minister told a press conference that the largest rally happened in Pancevo, where 4,650 people peacefully marched, without incidents or injuries – drawing an unspoken contrast to the university student protests which have been going on for nearly 10 months and have involved increasingly violent clashes with police.

Dacic went on to say that the rallies’ organizer – the pro-governmental Centar za Drustvenu Stabilnost (Center for Social Stability) – announced new gatherings for Aug. 23. According to pro-regime media, these “anti-blockade rallies” will then involve a total of 80 cities, towns and municipalities.
