The Rebel University initiative on Sept. 10 asked the European Commission Delegation and European Union ambassador to Serbia Andreas von Beckerath to protect the autonomy of the university, "which the government is systematically undermining."
Speaking at a news conference in front of the EC Delegation in Serbia, initiative representatives said the EU had mechanisms it could use to protect the university from political pressure. "There is an onslaught against science and the universities have proven to be the last bulwark in defending critical thought," the docent Jovana Bila Dubaic said.
According to her, the academic community could help increase support among the people in Serbia to EU integration, but European institutions must show clear and visible dedication to the values they proclaim.
After the news conference, Rebel University members delivered a letter to the EC Delegation. The Rebel University initiative is made up of professors and research fellows at higher education institutions in Serbia who support student protest demands.
