The International Economic Association’s (IEA) XXI World Congress commenced in Belgrade on June 22 and will last until June 26, drawing about 1,000 economics experts from around the globe.
Titled “Contrasting World Visions: Globalism vs. Nationalism, Multilateralism vs. Bilateralism, and Democracy vs. Autocracy,” the congress will involve the presentation of over 600 academic papers and marks the first time in 20 years Europe has hosted the event – as well as the first time ever it has taken place in the southeastern part of the continent.
The congress’s presenters include three Nobel Prize laureates for the field of economics: Jean Tirole, of the Toulouse School of Economics, Ester Duflo, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Eric Maskin, of Harvard University.
The event was opened by President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, who stated that this year’s topic is the global economic reality because we live in a time when all the theories which held true for decades are failing.
Vucic stressed that the world today is interwoven yet fragmented and that this contradiction lies at the heart of many challenges.
