Krško Nuclear Power Plant in Slovenia (BETAPHOTO/HINA/Daniel KASAP)
The Serbian authorities and state Rosatom corporation have begun talks on a project for building a nuclear power plant in Serbia, Serbian Ambassador to Russia Momcilo Babic was quoted as saying on Sept. 18 by biznis.rs.
Babic told Russia's Izvestia that "we are holding serious negotiations with Rosatom." "I think there is no better company in the world for building a nuclear power plant. I am sure that in the coming years there will be progress, because we need electricity," Babic said.
The biznis.rs website recalled that in November 2024 the Serbian parliament canceled a moratorium on building nuclear power plants, which was enacted in 1989 after the Chernobyl disaster. The decision was brought because it is estimated that the country's consumption of electricity will increase fourfold by 2050.
Belgrade is currently choosing a partner for this strategic project and South Korea, China and France are in the game in addition to Russia, the Russian media said.
