The police force’s refusal to aid the public prosecutor charged with investigating an incident in so-called Caciland is a sign that Serbia’s legal system is crumbling, attorney and former police inspector Goran Stupar said on Nov. 26.
“I’d never have imagined a situation where the police prevent a public prosecutor from performing her legal obligations. By definition, those same officers should aid and enable the prosecutor’s office in pursuing criminal charges,” Stupar told the Danas daily.
Several days ago, when the prosecutor on duty attempted to investigate allegations of a phone being stolen at Caciland – the illegal, pro-regime encampment which has blocked the heart of downtown Belgrade for the past eight months – local police actively attempted to dissuade her from entering the camp before finally admitting that they “dare not” enter themselves.
