The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) cautioned on Jan. 2 that in 2025 the media situation in Serbia drastically deteriorated across several criteria, even though media freedoms in Serbia had already been at an alarmingly low level for the past several years.

“The year 2025 was quite stressful for all media workers, and at this point there are no indications that things might be better or different in the new year, given the upward trajectory of negative trends regarding the safety of journalists, freedom of speech, project-based co-financing of media content, and the independent functioning of regulatory bodies and competent institutions,” the organization said in a release.

According to ANEM, the five developments that marked last year’s media scene in Serbia included a record number of threats, pressures and attacks on journalists, project-based co-financing of media content involving a series of controversial decisions, a full year without a Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) in place, protests against the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS), and “turbulence” in and around the United Media company.

As for threats and attacks on journalists, ANEM said that all records indicated that 2025 had been a record year in terms of the number of threats, pressures and physical attacks on journalists, women journalists, cameramen, photographers and other members of the media community. More than 370 cases in which the safety of media workers was threatened were recorded by the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS).
