President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic said on Jan. 7 that he “hopes” he will not be running for prime minister at the upcoming parliamentary elections but that he will let the polls show whether such action is “necessary.”

Speaking for Informer TV, the president clarified he will accept candidacy for PM only if public opinion polls show that “there is a possibility of Serbia taking a wrong path” otherwise.

Without mentioning details, Vucic said he “hope[s] not to become prime minister for multiple reasons” and that he would prefer a less involved, advisory role.

“I will definitely be included in the [ruling Progressive Party of Serbia’s] ticket. But whether I will be the main candidate will depend on whether I’ll want [to run for prime minister]… The ticket will be long, it will include top intellectuals [and] one or more movements. Anyone who wants to join it is welcome and the rest should not whine when they fail to meet the threshold,” Vucic stated.

According to him, snap parliamentary elections will take place in October, November or December of this year but their staging will depend on an agreement between the country’s political actors, specifically their willingness to negotiate.
