The dean of the Faculty of Political Studies in Belgrade, Maja Kovacevic, stated on Jan. 22 that “the regime fears the academic community, which is the only one that explains to this people what is happening in the country, while the authorities aim to decapitate the nation, to draw them into apathy and make them stop thinking on their own.

“The regime has reason to fear the academic community because, when we list their moves in the last year or so, they are clearly afraid. One of the most striking examples is the case of our colleague Jelena Kleut. Her example is the state’s message to younger teachers that they should mind what they do or say because they could easily have their employment terminated,” Kovacevic said in an interview to the Nova newspaper.

Asked about why the Ministry of Education was interested in dismissing her, she replied that this had to have to do with her political opinion and relations with students. “The main reason is the fact that I often speak frankly in public, and will continue to do so even if I am no longer the dean,” Kovacevic stated. The Ministry of Education recently sent Dean Kovacevic a memorandum of the re-election of the dean, and she has appealed to this decision.
