Analyst: Vucic Rules on the Throne of Bayonets

Political analyst Dragomir Andjelkovic stated on Jan. 29 that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic was ruling while sitting on a throne of bayonets and that the Movement for the People and State would not restore his rating.

Commenting on the fact that the Movement had not been promoted three and a half years since the announcement of its founding, Andjelkovic told BETA that the students’ protests had laid Vucic’s regime bare and that he could no longer restore his rating. “Vucic has conceived that movement for two reasons. The first was when he decided to resign to the position of president of the Serbian Progressive Party and believed that a political organization should be formed where he would be president, to once again formally legalize his non-institutional power. The second reason was a drastic decline in the rating of the Progressive Party, which is irreversibly sliding into demise. Vucic was searching for a new packaging – how to wrap the old to look new,” stated the analyst.

In his words, both reasons for founding the Movement for the People and State “have fallen through” when the students’ protests began. “The students’ protests have laid Vucic’s rule bare. He can no longer revitalize the Progressive Party’s rating or hide behind the Movement for the People and State. This movement was still-born and means nothing to Vucic. After having consolidated the mechanism of force, he now rules sitting on a throne of bayonets. He has replaced the military and police leaders and is now a classical dictator, relying on force,” Andjelkovic assessed.

Vucic announced the founding of the Movement for the People and State in August 2022. At the start of 2025, the movement was registered in the Agency for Commercial Registers as a citizens’ association, but its promotion has not been carried through.
