Interior Minister Ivica Dacic should explain the reasons for dismissing the chief of the Department for Combating Drugs and Drug Smuggling of the Criminal Police Directorate after the confiscation of more than five tons of marijuana in the village of Konjuh near Krusevac, the Serbia Center (SRCE) opposition party said in a statement on Feb. 6.

The party wants to know whether the dismissal of hitherto chief Rade Popovic and his deputy Nikola Djokovic are tied to their participation in that operation and to, as they put it, Dacic's statement that "all the participants in the seizure will be rewarded."

"The public has the right to know whether the dismissals of the [police department] chiefs who managed one of the biggest marijuana seizures in the history of Serbia were part of that 'reward' or a consequence of other reasons, unknown to the public. Instead of being rewarded for a job professionally done, Popovic and Djokovic have been removed, while Dusan Perovanovic, a cadre from the Security Unit, has been appointed in their place," the party said.
