The Ukrainian embassy in Serbia condemned on Feb. 25 the vandalization of a monument to the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko as a shameful act.
A press release issued by the embassy said the news was received with profound indignation and called on Serbian law enforcement to look into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The statement called the incident a disgraceful act targeting a monument of architecture of the city of Novi Sad and an attempt to desecrate the memory of a symbol of the Ukrainian people, stressing that it had happened on a "tragic date" for Ukraine and the world -- Feb. 24. The purpose of such acts of vandalism is to undermine Ukrainian-Serbian relations, the statement read further.
The monument to Shevchenko, located near the university campus in Novi Sad, was doused with black paint on Feb. 24.
Feb. 24 marked the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Russian invasion against Ukraine.
