NATO Headquarters in Brussels (BETAPHOTO/NEVENA ZARIC)
Late on March 5, NATO dismissed claims that Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo has been used for U.S. attacks on Iran and stressed that it was not taking part as an organization in the current military campaign against the Iranian authorities.
That allegation is false and NATO completely rejects it, a NATO official told BETA when asked about claims on social media that missiles targeting Iran were launched from Camp Bondsteel, which is also KFOR's operation headquarters.
In their reply to BETA, the NATO official said the western alliance's secretary general Mark Rutte had already made it clear that NATO as an entity was not involved in the current air campaign against the Iranian regime.
The KFOR mission in Kosovo, the official added, continues to carry out its mandate - to contribute to a secure and safe environment for all people living in Kosovo, on the grounds of the 1999 U.N. Security Council Resolution 1244, at all times, without bias and in close coordination with the Kosovo police and the EULEX mission.
The official also said the U.S. had almost 600 soldiers in KFOR and continued to play a key role in supporting lasting security throughout Kosovo, and regional stability also as part of that NATO-led mission.
