The ruling Serbian Progressive Party is attempting to avoid snap elections because its ratings no longer guarantee a win, Professor Dusan Spasojevic of the Belgrade University School of Political Sciences said on June 24.

Speaking for the Danas daily, Spasojevic opined that the regime no longer sees any reason to call early parliamentary elections since public pressure has significantly lessened.

“There is no longer the [kind of] pressure we had, for instance, last year. And there is truly not a single reason to call elections which the regime will potentially lose. Of course, there is still a certain logic whereby sudden snap elections could also bring the regime certain advantages, precisely because no one knows when these elections will be held,” the professor explained.

According to him, the regime has been delaying snap elections for almost a year in a bid to resolve the crisis it is in and it is highly probable the authorities will continue with this tactic for some time, i.e. as long as possible.
