Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has said he will take part in the upcoming summit of the European Union (EU) and the Western Balkans in Montenegro only because European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asked him to.

Speaking as a guest on a show on public service broadcaster RTS late on May 21, Vucic said, "I feel respect for Von der Leyen because she has always shown respect for Serbia" and added that he would not be going to the summit "if anyone else had asked me to."

"Just like I didn't go to the last two summits of the European Political Community because I don't know what the point would be, what would I talk about, the rule of law, where they explain to me that we beat up blockaders during local elections," said Vucic.

Speaking about relations with Montenegro, Vucic said that Montenegrin officials "accuse Serbia every day" of interfering in the country's affairs, while he is "trying to escape from that topic and move away from that."

"You are celebrating independence, we are not celebrating your independence. We did not want the dissolution of the joint state, but politicians from both Montenegro and Serbia arranged it for us," Vucic added.
