The replacement of the editors-in-chief of United Group media in Serbia represents “a last-ditch effort” by the Serbian regime and, in fact, “signifies its end,” said Srdjan Milivojevic, the president of the Democratic Party, in a statement for the Aug. 19 edition of the Nova daily.
“Media takeovers didn’t help former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban to win the elections either,” Milivojevic stressed.
On Aug. 17, the editors-in-chief of N1 TV, Nova TV, the Nova and Danas dailies and the Radar weekly, were all removed without notice and with all the above-mentioned roles assumed by Pedro Vargas Santos David, the owner of the Portuguese investment group Alpac Capital, which is the process of buying United Group media.
Without free and independent media, free elections are impossible, Milivojevic said, adding that President Aleksandar Vucic is well aware of this fact.
“I encourage the people working at Nova, Danas, N1 and Radar, who have contributed immeasurably to reaching many people in this country… I’m calling on the public to stand with these employees and am telling the regime that they can take over all the media in this country but cannot smother freedom and the truth,” Milivojevic concluded.
