Democratic Party leader Zoran Lutovac said on Jan. 13 that intensive work on final and formal merger of three parties into the group he leads is in progress, and that it can be expected to happen at the beginning of February.

Lutovac told the Danas daily that even greater challenges and fights for the rights and freedoms that the government had usurped lay ahead, adding that it is important that the merger is “done properly and in the best interest of the [Democratic] Party, its members and supporters.”

“It’s true, it is speculated that the final and formal merger will take place on Feb. 3,” Lutovac said.

Further commenting on the unification of the Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party and Together for Serbia, Lutovac also said that it will be a great day not only for his party, but the entire society and democracy in Serbia.

“The Democratic Party is not just one of the parties on the Serbian political scene, it is an instigator and creator of all major changes for the better in our society,” Lutovac stated.

When asked if the debt toward Alliance for Serbia leader Dragan Djilas has been paid off, an issue which led many to believe that the Democratic Party is under Djilas’ influence, Lutovac responded that “too many people believe Vucic’s tabloids.”

“The Democratic Party has no debts toward Dragan Djilas, it has never been or will ever be under anyone’s influence, and therefore, not under his either,” Lutovac said.
