The chair of the European Parliament Delegation to EU-Serbia Stabilization and Association Parliamentary Committee, Tanja Fajon, has expressed concern with the idea to lower the election threshold in Serbia from five to three percent.

“I did not hear any of the parties discuss the idea of lowering the election census during our dialogue last autumn,” Fajon told the Jan. 14 issue of Belgrade daily Blic.

She stressed that such changes were not considered a good practice and could seriously undermine the trust.

“How can political parties or voters be provided enough time to get acquainted with them? Hardly, it rather provokes concern about the fairness of the elections,” she noted.

According to Fajon, one should be aware of the EU guidelines on election observation, which state that if late changes are necessary, then a broad agreement should be achieved among election stakeholders, while all changes should be implemented well.
