The EU high representative for foreign policy and security, Josep Borrell, stated on Dec. 1 that the Western Balkans remained a strategic region for the European Union, and its stability the issue of utmost importance.

Speaking ahead of the session about Western Balkans at the NATO ministerial meeting in Riga, Borrell called for the reform of the election law in Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the resumption of the dialogue about the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo. Borrell expressed concern over the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, "where tensions have been observed in the recent days and attempts to nullify 26 years of peace and stability," and called for the implementation of reforms necessary for preserving the unified state and reform the election law.

Borrell also said that there was a lot of tension in Kosovo and Serbia in the recent months, during summer, and reiterated the need for resuming the dialogue.

"The situation is calm now, but there is still the need to return to the Dialogue, to continue the Dialogue. There is no other way to stabilize the situation," he added.
