Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said in Brussels late on March 24 that Serbia, as an EU candidate country, could not sit in two chairs regarding the position on Russia and the war in Ukraine.

"One cannot sit in two chairs. There are situations where you are either on the right side of history, on the right side of law, or you're being shifty. There can be no shiftiness here," Plenkovic said ahead of an EU summit focusing on intensifying the sanctions against Russia due to the war in Ukraine.

Plenkovic further said that he understood that imposing sanctions against Russia was a delicate issue for Serbia ahead of elections, but underscored that "one cannot be for both [things] at once."

"If you've chosen the EU and you have the ambition to share some fundamental values, then you certainly cannot sit in two chairs, then you must make a choice and respect European values," said Plenkovic, adding that this was a message he was very clearly sending Serbia.
