European Council President Charles Michel has said that, given the current momentum in European Union enlargement, North Macedonia has a realistic chance of making headway on its path to the EU and joining the European family.

In a post on the X social media platform about his meeting with North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski in Brussels, Michel wrote that he "commends North Macedonia's geostrategic orientation and commitment to EU membership."

The MIA news agency reported that the European Council president stressed that it was now "key to implement past commitments, respect legally binding agreements and continue EU-related reforms with determination."

On Sept. 19, Mickoski said that he said at a meeting with Michel and a lunch for Western Balkan leaders hosted by European Commission President Ursula fon der Leyen that his country could no longer brook ultimatums and that EU integration had to be based on achievement, not bilateralization.
