Croatian President Zoran Milanovic on Aug. 27 called on the country’s government to initiate the procedure for recognizing Palestine by the Croatian parliament.

“Croatia should recognize Palestine as a step towards stopping the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. Recognizing the right of the Palestinian people to their own state is the only way to establish a lasting peace in the Middle East,” Milanovic said in a meeting with Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian, who is on an official visit to Croatia.

Milanovic said that, within his constitutional powers, he would strongly advocate for Croatia to recognize Palestine as soon as possible, according to a statement from his Office. The Croatian president strongly condemned the Israeli army's attacks on civilians in Gaza and the announced military occupation of Gaza, which, he said, “cannot be justified by anything.”

Croatia has so far provided humanitarian aid worth around EUR3 million, including EUR1 million for the children of Gaza through UNICEF. Croatia’s decision to deploy more humanitarian aid, worth EUR1 million, was presented during the meeting, according to the statement.
