Bosnia and Herzegovina Paying Interest on The Unengaged Loans

Bosnia and Herzegovina currently has KM2.67bn (EUR1.36bn) in unused loans from international creditors. 

According to the Ministry of Finance and Treasury in the Council of Ministers, some of the loans have been “on hold” for years, while some are being realized but have not yet been fully implemented, the Sarajevo Dnevni Avaz has reported. 

Bosnia is paying interest on the unengaged loans. 

According to the Ministry of Finance and the Treasury, Bosnia and Herzegovina engaged just KM855,66 (EUR437.5m) of the loans in the first two quarters, the majority of which, or 76.04%, is made up of International Monetary Fund (IMF) funds, i.e. a fast assistance loan of EUR330m, which was approved in May, B92 has reported. 

As for the other loans that it has withdrawn, 5.6% is from the European Investment Bank, 5.49% from the Balkan investment framework, 4.85% from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and 8.02% from other sources. 

A total of over KM659m (EUR355.3m) in EIB funds, KM764 (EUR390.6m) from the IMF, KM258m (EUR131.9m) from the World Bank – the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and KM389m (EUR198.9m) in EBRD funds has yet to be engaged.
