On April 8, representatives of the Informal Academic Network submitted to the President’s Headquarters, in Belgrade’s New Palace, a petition with over 20,000 signatures demanding early parliamentary elections.
Addressing the media gathered in front of the New Palace, the Network – comprising multiple independent academic groups opposing the current establishment – called the move a means of putting pressure on President Aleksandar Vucic and letting him know that the public has the right to choose their country’s course, which is best done via free and democratic parliamentary elections.
“At the recent [regular] local elections [in ten municipalities], we saw the regime draw on every resource they have and still the university student ticket achieved remarkable results, with very little resources and a lot of engagement on the ground. So we hope the people will come out to vote and show their will,” said Mirjana Jovanovic of the Free University of Kragujevac movement when asked whether elections are possible in the current circumstances.
