From 2003 to 2024, 69 permits pertaining to the exploration of lithium and accompanying elements were issued in Serbia, and lithium mines are planned at 30 locations in Serbia in the Loznica - Valjevo - Bor triangle, daily Danas' online edition reported on July 24.

The first permit was issued to the Rio Sava Exploration company on June 8, 2004 for performing geological exploration of evaporites in the Jadar neogenic basin, in the territory of Loznica, according to a statement from the Prvi Prvi na Skali (PPNS) association based on data provided by the Ministry of Mining and Energy.
Rio Sava Exploration, which is Rio Tinto's daughter company, was the only one to have received all state permits until 2010, says PPNS.

Different lithium-related permits were issued to the following companies: Rio Sava Exploration, LithiumLi Balkan, Ultra Balkans, Balkan Gold, LithiumLi Exploration, Rare Mineral Resources, GeoMin Consulting (now Euro Lithium Balkan), Nova Centauri Metals (now Balkan Istrazivanja), Centurion Metals (former Nova Centauri Metals), Euro Lithium Balkan, Jadar Lithium (now Balkan Istrazivanja), and Sermetco.

Ecologist Igor Radosevic has said that Rio Tinto is not the only company planning on mining lithium in Serbia. In his words, other companies that are planning their own lithium mines in Serbian territory are Euro Lithium, which is planning to open its first mine in Valjevo, Ub and Mionica, while Balkan Istrazivanja plans to open lithium mines in the areas of Jagodina, Gornji Milanovac, Rekovac, and Pozega.

According to him, lithium mines are planned at 30 locations in Serbia in the Loznica - Valjevo - Bor triangle.

He added that it was a territory spanning more than 22,000 square kilometers that was home to some two million people.
