Public utility enterprises in Belgrade currently owe RSD19 billion to suppliers, which is more than EUR160 million, and that affects the operation of a whole series of supplier companies, the Center for Local Self-administration (CLS) non-governmental organization announced on Oct. 22.

“Of the 19 billion of debt, 11 billion is within the due date, but as much as eight billion is overdue. According to exclusive information obtained by CLS, the amount owed by the city’s secretariats and the directorate adds on top of this amount,” stated the director of CLS, Nikola Jovanovic.

In his words, the city administration is currently “the biggest generator of economic crisis.” “The situation in the city is critical and Belgrade could be completely paralyzed already next year, unless there is a dramatic change in the system of management, corruption is eliminated and public utilities are professionally managed,” Jovanovic stated.
