Exploration of a surface area of 10,000 square kilometers has revealed that in the area between Bor, Majdanpek and the Danube and Timok rivers there is so much mining waste that, with the application of the most favorable technology, about 90,000 tons of copper and close to four tons of gold, worth upwards of USD720m, could be extracted.
IRM General Manager Mile Bugarin has told the daily Vecernje Novosti that five years ago, based on an agreement between the governments of Serbia and Japan, the IRM and Akita University launched a USD5m project aimed at exploring the space that was under the direct influence of mining production.
“Based on that exploration, for which our partners from Japan also used two satellites, data were obtained on more than USD720m being ‘trapped’ in mining waste, according to current metal prices,” says Bugarin.
