Last week’s session of the Serbian parliament, which focused on the opposition MPs’ proposal to ban lithium and boron mining in Serbia, additionally widened the gap between the regime spearheaded by President Aleksandar Vucic and its opponents from various parts of society. The ruling majority in the parliament prevented the adoption of the proposal, which the opponents of a potential lithium mine from the leading environmental associations described as “a declaration of war.” Vucic did not show up at the sitting, during which he paid visits to Germany, Montenegro and Croatia, using the opportunity to fortify his popularity at home.
