Vucic Between a Rock and a Hard Place

On Jan. 10, the U.S. imposed sanctions against oil company Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), which Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had announced earlier. At the moment, what seems to be the most realistic option is for Serbia to buy Russia’s majority stake in NIS, but reaching an agreement on that will be no easy feat. In parallel with that problem, Vucic also has an open front with students, who are continuing their protests. To turn events in his favor, Vucic is again proposing an advisory referendum on his staying in the presidential position, which the opposition certainly will not take part in.
