The cancellation of a two-day visit by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Belgrade, without Serbia’s responsibility, is a highly favorable outcome for the authorities led by President Aleksandar Vucic. In a situation where Belgrade keeps refusing to join the EU’s sanctions against Moscow, Lavrov’s arrival would have additionally jeopardized Serbia’s position in the West and would have called a visit by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, announced for June 10, into question. That outcome would have been a disaster for the government in Belgrade, as confirmed by Vucic himself.
