The North Macedonian government requested the country's parliament to meet and declare a state of emergency over the coronavirus outbreak.
Prime Minister Oliver Spasovski said at a press conference that the situation was extremely serious, calling for emergency measures as national health and economy had been threatened by the outbreak.
"This is an emergency and that's why a state of emergency is required. The government is certain about it, and at today's session we have agreed to request a state of emergency to apply across the country immediately," the prime minister said.
North Macedonia's parliament was disbanded on Feb. 16 ahead of an early parliamentary election, scheduled for April 12. Parliamentary leaders agreed on March 17 that "the election should be postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak."
