The former Slovak foreign minister, Miroslav Lajcak, is expected to become the EU’s special representative for the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue and the Western Balkans, Radio Free Europe (RFE) has reported.

According to a document seen by RFE, Lajcak will assume the post for a period of one year on April 2, a day after the EU ambassadors are expected to give their go-ahead for his appointment.

The working document from March 30 specifies that Lajcak’s first task would be to achieve “comprehensive normalization of relations” between Serbia and Kosovo. That should be achieved through “a legally binding agreement that addresses all outstanding issues between the parties in accordance with international law, and contributing to regional stability,” it is said in the document.

The document also states that Lajcak’s mandate will also include the work on improving neighborly relations and reconciliation in the entire Western Balkans, increasing the EU visibility through public diplomacy and contributing to the unity, consistency and efficiency of EU activities in the region.

Lajcak, who was nominated for the post by EU High Representative Josep Borrell on March 20, resigned as Slovak foreign minister earlier this month after holding the post for eight years. From 2007 to 2009, Lajcak served as high representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
