Epidemiologist Predrag Kon said on April 30 he believes that a dispute regarding the length of the upcoming May Day weekend’s curfew in Serbia has been overblown which, he added, makes him uneasy.
“The dispute about this weekend has been blown way out of proportion because [everything that was achieved] may be ruined. I think we have to hold on, but I understand that it is always best to make a compromise as that way we can come out of a problem that has been artificially created and exaggerated. People do not know how grave and deadly this disease is, that every fifth elderly person with previous chronic conditions dies,” Kon said.
The epidemiologist told the RTS public service that it is the doctors who are insisting on everyone adhering to the measures during the prolonged curfew, as it will be, according to him, the last weekend with such a restriction.
Speaking about when the state of emergency will be lifted, he said it will happen the moment the activity of the virus has been very low for a full week. “After that, it will be necessary to constantly monitor the virus. If it begins to spread again, we will have to act,” Kon said.
Police Director Vladimir Rebic said on April 30 that since the introduction of the state of emergency in Serbia around 7,100 citizens, of which more than a 1,000 were over 65, have violated the ban on movement.
Commenting on this data, Rebic told the RTS that compared to the population total, we can be “relatively satisfied” with such results.
